types of Low Slope/Flat Roofing
EPDM/Rubber: Ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, or EPDM roofing, is used in little to no slope buildings. Available in 2 thickness options, 45 & 60 mil. Both can create a high-quality roofing system, while the thicker option has a longer shelf life when installed properly. This rubber roofing system uses liquid adhesive or special seam tape to seal the seams of the EPDM. While this type of roof has been around since the 1960’s, it is still widely used today.
TPO: Thermo plastic polyolefin, or TPO, is a single ply roofing membrane made up of synthetics and reinforcing scrim. Introduced in the 1990s, this is a newer technology than EPDM that is also designed for little to no slope roofs. An advantage of TPO over EPDM is the use of a hot air gun to thermally weld the seams together, as opposed to using liquid adhesive. A second advantage of TPO is its ability to reflect light due to its commonly used white color, resulting in lower cooling costs. EPDMs classic black color absorbs light which can increase cooling costs in the hot summer months.
